North Coast Community Event Day 2

This is the second day of the 2-day North Coast Community Event. Register separately for one day or both days.  Any second registration or more of an In-Person Event will receive a discount.

This registration is for Day 2, March 24, which will begin at the Yurok Country Visitor Center with multiple talks from Tribal leaders on the connections between State & National Parks, and various projects vital to the North Coast. Caravan up the coast through Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park to Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park. Then hike to the Grove of Titans to marvel at the immense size of the Coast Redwoods. Presentations will immerse you in the beauty of the flora & fauna of the area, as well as the connections between the tribal communities and the Nat’l & State Parks.  Attendees can head back home or travel farther north to Crescent City for dinner and a night at any of the hotels along the scenic harbor. Both days of events will provide you with techniques that will inspire you on your own interpretive journey.

Lunch is provided. Dress warmly, raingear, waterproof boots & binoculars are recommended.

Schedule

10:00 – 10:30 am:  (30 min)  Registration Check-in at outdoor amphitheater at Yurok Country Visitor Center
10:30 – 10:45 am:  (15 min)  Welcome to Yurok Country, Orientation, Overview

Description: Share the highlights of the previous day with each other. Explore the Visitor Center to view the  historical artifacts & the artistry of the local people. Learn about the local community of Klamath and the activities the area has to offer

10:45 – 11:00 am: (15 min)  Explore Visitor Center/Gift Shop (open 10am – 5pm)
11:00 am  – 12:00 pm: (1 hr) Presentation by Tribal Speakers at outdoor amphitheater

Description: Tribal speakers will immerse you in the cultural ties they have to the land & the magnificent  Klamath River. Learn how they keep their traditions alive and have persevered today by applying their traditional knowledge

12:00 – 12:30 pm: (30 min) Picnic Lunch (included with registration).
12:30 – 1:30 pm: (1 hr) Presentation by Tribal Speakers at outdoor amphitheater

Description: Learn about the various projects that the Yurok community has developed to become a leading force in the Klamath dam removal, the Northern California Condor Release Program (NCCRP), and the Indigenous Marine Stewardship Areas (IMSA).

1:30 – 2:30 pm: (1 hr) – Caravan through Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park to Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park to Grove of Titans trailhead.
  • Drive from Yurok Country Visitor Center to Elk Valley Road = 28 min/20 miles
  • Elk Valley Road to Howland Hill Rd. to Grove of Titans Trailhead  = 19 min/5.3 miles
  • Total drive time = approx. 1 hour
2:30 pm – 4:30 pm: (2 hours) – Hike to Grove of Titans

Description: Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park is the home to some of the most majestic ancient redwoods alive today, known as the Grove of Titans. Traverse through these giants along a boardwalk to protect their roots and marvel at their splendor. Hear from multiple speakers about how the redwoods are being protected today and the plans for the future. Gain insight into how the relations between the different agencies can help you to apply this knowledge to your own community.

End of the Day’s Scheduled Activities

(10:00 am – 4:30 pm = 6.5  Continuing Education hours)


  • Drive to Crescent City, just a few miles from where Elk Valley Road meets Hwy. 101 to find the closest, and only, restaurants open for dinner.
  • Heading south, Redwood Hotel & Casino Restaurant in Klamath is closed Sunday and Mondays. The next restaurants available, until 8 pm, are south from Crescent City in Trinidad a 1 hr 10 min/62 mile drive.
4:30 to 5  pm (25 min) – Caravan to  Crescent City for dinner
  • Drive time from Grove of Titans trailhead, Howland Hill Rd.  to Elk Valley Road = 19 min/5.3 miles
  • Elk Valley Road to Crescent City = 3 min/0.8 mile
  • Total drive time =  approx. 25 min
